The Fruits of Good Teachers

Growing up, I have always admired the art of learning and teaching. As a student, one of my favorite early memories of school was being exposed to different activities that challenged me and let me use my sense of creativity. I always had a natural inclination towards the mathematical field, but I also had a passion for the arts. I could say that I was a very outspoken and curious child, and I knew that I was a tough one to handle since I would get overly-enthusiastic and I tend to ask a lot of questions.

This sense of curiosity and hunger to learn was something that I brought with me as I grew up; thus, I realized that this positive outlook in learning wasn’t something that I developed myself, but it was something that was instilled in me by my mentors. I was blessed to have great teachers ever since I can remember. While they taught me academically, they undoubtedly imparted wisdom in me as well, that was needed for me to grow holistically into the person who I am now. This made me appreciate my mentors deeply, and it made me develop an unexplainable bond with them. They have become a great influence and impact in my life, and I will always be grateful to them for placing me in an environment wherein I learned how to love learning itself. Now that I have become a teacher myself, I realize how big of a responsibility it is.

Every moment spent with a student is an opportunity to make an impact on his/her life. In this day and age, the challenge in becoming a teacher has increased drastically. We are being forced to teach in an online classroom setting, which hinders physical interaction between teachers and students, as well as between students, which helps create a safe space for the whole classroom.

This adds up to the existing challenges in preparing materials beforehand that are educational, fun and interactive all at the same time.

Despite all these, I feel no regret in being a teacher, because becoming an avenue for my students’ growth offers a different kind of fulfillment that nothing else can bring. Watching my students learn and become curious about the whole world that awaits them inspires me to push through all the challenges that come with being a teacher. I am and will continuously thrive intentionally to be the same spark to my students, in the same way that my teachers were to me.
